Tigers End Season With Sixth Place Finish At Nationals

CAMDEN, N.J. - Brown University claimed both the second and first varsity eight's races to capture its second consecutive NCAA Women's Rowing Championship Sunday morning on the Cooper River. Princeton finished in sixth in the varsity eight race and sixth in the overall points race.
The Bears, who also finished second in the varsity fours, edged Washington, 59-55 in the team standings. The Huskies, national champions in 1997 and 98, were runners-up in both the second and first varsity eight's. Virginia finished third with 48 points.
Brown held a slight 29-28 edge over Washington in the team standings entering the varsity eight's final. The Bears got off to a solid start in a tight field through the opening 500 meters and led the length of the 2,000-meter course to finish in 6:37.20. Washington was in fourth place through the first quarter before using a strong push down the stretch to place second with a time of 6:41.10.
The Bears also captured the second varsity eight's with a championship-record time of 6:49.10, besting the former mark of 6:50.79 set by Virginia last season. Similar to the first eight's final, Brown led from wire-to-wire, while Washington worked its way up from fourth through 500 meters to finish second in 6:58.79.
Washington took home the national title in the varsity four's race in 7:49.00 The Huskies battled Brown for the lead through majority of the course before pulling away in the final 500 meters. The Bears crossed the line in 7:53.10, while Virginia was third (7:55.10).
In the final team standings, Cal was fourth (38 points) and Michigan finished fifth (34). Princeton (32), Boston (20), Michigan State (18), Ohio State (13) and Harvard-Radcliffe (13) finished sixth through tenth. The Buckeyes claimed ninth place by virtue of their higher finish in the varsity eight petite final (OSU was fifth in 6:58.10, while Harvard-Radcliffe was sixth in 6:58.60).
