New Haven, Conn. - Matt Striebel tied his career high with four goals and added two assists for a career-high six points to lead Princeton to a 13-4 win over Yale in front of 1,500 at the Soccer-Lacrosse Stadium.
The victory, Princeton's 32nd straight in the Ivy League, improved the fourth-ranked Tigers to 5-1 overall and 1-0 in the league as they head to Penn Tuesday afternoon (4 p.m.). Yale slipped to 3-3, 1-2.
The game was scoreless after the first quarter, and Princeton held a precarious 4-2 lead at intermission. Striebel then scored all four of his goals in the third quarter as Princeton broke the game open, building its lead to 10-3.
Striebel, a senior, had four goals and five points in last year's opener at Johns Hopkins. He also had 24 goals and 55 assists for the first three years of his career. He now has 10 goals and six assists this season. "We have a lot of good players, and coach [Bill Tierney] wants to get them all on the field," Striebel said. "If that means I move to midfield, that's fine. It gets me in front of the goal more, and sometimes I get a short stick on me. Whatever it takes, that's fine."
Yale came out deliberately and was called for stalling twice in the first quarter. The Bulldogs then scored the first goal of the game 22 seconds into the second quarter on a shot from Brian Hunt, but Princeton scored the next four, including two from Owen Daly. Hunt then scored his second with 24 seconds remaining before halftime, and it was a tight 4-2 game at intermission.
Striebel then scored twice in a 1:26 span to start a 6-1 Princeton run, which also included two more Striebel goals and two goals from freshman Ryan Boyle. B.J. Prager then scored twice in a 13-second span to start the fourth quarter as Princeton cruised home.
"You can't look past any team in the league," Striebel said. "They're all tough. They're all ready to play us. The Ivy League is our first goal every year, and it's never easy. You look back through the years and you see every year has tough, close Ivy games."
Rob Torti scored two goals for Princeton, while Sean Hartofilis had one goal and one assist. Brad Dumont and Ryan Mollett also had assists for Princeton.
