Rob Torti scored four goals and Ryan Boyle added two goals and four assists as top-ranked Princeton defeated Harvard 15-1 in front of 2,672 sun-baked fans at the Class of 1952 Stadium. Sean Hartofilis added three goals and two assists for Princeton, which won its 35th straight Ivy League game.
Princeton, the winner of six straight Ivy championships, travels to Cornell next Saturday (April 21) in a matchup of teams that are 4-0 in the league. The winner of the Princeton-Cornell game will clinch at least a share of the championship and will earn the league's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.
"I was afraid we might be looking ahead a little," said Princeton coach Bill Tierney, whose team is 8-1 overall. "But it was a beautiful day, a great crowd and a great win for us." Princeton, which has outscored its four Ivy opponents by a combined 62-15, led 3-0 at the end of the first quarter and 9-1 at intermission. The Tigers have held three of their four league opponents scoreless in the first quarter, and the 15-1 win over Harvard came one week after a 15-2 win over Brown.
"We're really confident on defense," said Princeton midfielder Winship Ross. "Trevor [Tierney, the goalie] is making saves, and the whole defense is playing well together. We have to keep it going now. Cornell is going to be tough."
Torti's four goals give him seven goals and five assists in the last three games, while Boyle continues to lead the Tigers in scoring, now with 13 goals and 20 assists for 33 points. B.J. Prager also scored two goals for Princeton, extending his consecutive games with at least one goal streak to 28, while Hartofilis now leads the team in goals with 18, one more than Prager.
Dana Sprong scored the lone Harvard goal, perhaps the most acrobatic of the day, on a tough shot near the crease with four minutes remaining in the first half. Tierney made eight saves while allowing one goal in his three quarters.
"We had some games where we weren't shooting well," said Torti. "We've worked hard on that in practice. It doesn't do you any good to take 50 shots if 30 of them aren't on goal. We're starting to feed off each other really well."
