Princeton, N.J. - Princeton's three-game unbeaten streak game to a screeching halt on Wednesday night at Lourie-Love Field. The Tigers battled the weather conditions and an explosive Rutgers team that put up seven goals in a 7-1 defeat of Princeton.
The Tigers and Scarlet Knights played even for the first 37 minutes with most of the contest played near midfield. Rutgers' Chris Karcz was able to breakaway from about 35-feet outside the Princeton goal and slipped his shot past a diving Erik White to give the Knights a 1-0 lead at 37:49. Two shots later, Josh Gros pushed the lead to two goals, giving Rutgers a 2-0 lead at the break.
White had four saves in the first half as the Knights outshot the Tigers 8-2. Rutgers was able to attain momentum in the second half with Gros scoring only 46 seconds into the period. Gros finished the game with three goals, Sam Casellanos scored two goals and Oliver Peterson scored the other goal for Rutgers.
Princeton's lone goal was credited to Darren Spicer, who now has three goals in this, his freshman season. The Tigers finished the game with seven shots, three on goal. Erik White registered six saves and was relieved by older brother Jason, who had one save and one goal-against.
The six-goal loss is Princeton's worst under head coach Jim Barlow and the worst loss since an 8-1 loss at Brown in 1972. The Tigers fall to 3-7-4 on the year, Rutgers improves to 7-6-3. Princeton will look to regroup and focus on the Ivy League when it plays at Cornell this Saturday, Nov. 2.
