PRINCETON, N.J. - Despite 21 kills from Lauren Grumet and a career-best 26 digs from freshman Jenny McReynolds, the Princeton women's volleyball lost its Ivy League opener 3-1 to the two-time defending league champion Penn Quakers Friday night. After falling in the first two games, the Tigers rallied for a 30-23 win in the third game, but could not manage a win in the fourth game.
The Tigers hurt themselves early with both offensive and defensive miscues in the first two games, and the Quakers took control of the match with 30-26 and 30-24 victories. Princeton played its best game in game three, while Penn played its worst, hitting a match-low .102 in the game.
Princeton and Penn were even at 15-15 in the fourth game, but Meghan Schloat, who led all players with 61 assists, served the Quakers to a 10-0 run to put the Quakers out of reach. The Tigers would rally late, but couldn't come all the way back. While the Quakers were balanced in their hitting with four players killing at least 13 balls, the Tigers had two players, Grumet and Kellie Cramm, with at least 20 kills and no other players in double figures. As a team, Princeton had 61 kills, but it also added 30 errors.
Jenny Senske had 49 assists for the Tigers. She was also one of five players with at least 10 digs. McReynolds, in her first career match at Dillon Gym, was the defensive standout, digging 26 balls, including a number of spectacular saves.
Elisabeth Kwak-Hefferan led Penn with 16 kills and only one error (a .326 attack percentage). Lauren Carter and Heather Janssen each had 15 kills.
Princeton will be home three times next week, beginning with a 7 p.m. showdown Wednesday night with St. Francis.
