Tigers Compete In Day One Of Heptagonal Championships

New Haven, Conn. - Paul Lyons and Josh McCaughey each earned gold at the 2003 Outdoor Heptagonal Championships on Saturday. Lyons won the shot put and McCaughey won the hammer throw as both the men's and women's track teams competed on Day One of events in New Haven, Conn.
Lyons took the shot put with a distance of 58-02.50 while Rocky Craley, who finished second in the event, registered a put of 56-01.25. The hammer throw saw four Tigers place in the field's top six with McCaughey leading the way by winning the event with a toss of 204-00. Mark Smith placed third (189-01), Drew Geant placed fifth (170-09) and Kenneth Stringer placed sixth (169-09) for Princeton.
Dwaine Banton finished third in the long jump with a mark of 23-02.75, Austin Smith finished third in the 10,000-meter run (30:25.57) and Emily Kroshus placed third in the 10,000-meter run with a time of 35:56.55 to round out Princeton's scoring on Day One. Jennifer Byrd also sits in second after four events in the heptathlon. Several Tigers advanced to tomorrow's finals on track, including Hasina Outtz, who will run in the 100- and 400-meter hurdles on Sunday. Cack Ferrell is in the finals for the 1,500-meter run while Bruce Hancock and Jonathan Kieliszak represent the men in the event.
Cameron Atkinson is in finals for both the 100- and 200-meter runs and he is joined by Banton in the 100 and both Mary Taylor and Pat Schottel in the 200 finals. The 400-meter dash has Justin Reed and Mike Kopp in the finals while the 800 has Josh Kauke and David Dean. The Tigers also have Adrian Mullings in the 110-meter hurdles and Jeff Key and Ryan Carpenter in the 400-meter hurdles.
The Princeton men sit in second with 49 team points, one point back of Cornell and the women are tied for seventh with six points after Day One. The 2003 Heptagonal Championships conclude tomorrow on the campus of Yale University.
