Forest Hills, N.Y. - Trevor Smith received the ITA/Arthur Ashe Award at the ITA Collegiate All-Star Awards Ceremony Luncheon last weekend at the West Side Tennis Club. Smith and Kristen Stubbs, a recent grad of Virginia Tech, received their awards from Jeanne Moutoussamy-Ashe, the widow of the late Ashe.
Smith, who graduated in May, received the ITA/Arthur Ashe Award for Leadership and Sportsmanship, presented to a player who has exhibited outstanding sportsmanship and leadership as well as scholastic, extracurricular and tennis achievements. Smith's father is tennis legend Stan Smith, a former U.S. Open, Wimbledon and NCAA champion, and friend to the late Ashe. Smith was captain for Princeton this past season and played No. 1 singles. An ITA Scholar-Athlete, he was also active Athletes in Action and a Special Olympics volunteer.
"It has been a real honor to have coached Trevor these past three years," Princeton head coach Glenn Michibata says. "I've seen him grow and mature both on and off the court. By the time this season began back in September, I knew he was ready to be our captain and leader. Through his excellence in the classroom, active participation in campus activities, pursuit of excellence on the tennis courts, sportsmanship and heartfelt concern for the Princeton tennis program, Trevor exemplified all the qualities a coach could hope for in a captain. We will sorely miss his presence but his influence on the team will be felt long after he graduates. I hope that he has enjoyed his years as a member of the Princeton tennis team and wish him the best as he moves on to the next phase of his life."
