Princeton Announces 2003-2004 Men's Basketball Schedule
September 04, 2003 | Men's Basketball
Sept. 4, 2003
Matchups against three-time NCAA champion Duke, 2002 Final Four participant Oklahoma and 2003 NIT semifinalist Minnesota highlight the 2003-2004 Princeton men's basketball schedule announced by head coach John Thompson today.
The Tigers meet Mike Krzyzewski and the Blue Devils at Cameron Indoor Stadium in Durham, N.C., on Wed. Dec. 17, at 7:30 p.m. That game will be televised nationally on espn2. Princeton's other nationally-televised game is the matchup with Kelvin Sampson and the Sooners on Sat., Jan. 3. That game will be part of the Touchstone Energy All-College Classic at Oklahoma City's Ford Center, with the Princeton-Oklahoma game scheduled to be televised by espn2 at 5 p.m. EST.
"As usual, we will challenge ourselves in non-conference play in order to prepare for the league season," says Thompson, 48-34 in three seasons as Princeton's head coach. "Road games in difficult environments will make us a better team, especially with the young group we have coming in this season." The Princeton-Minnesota game takes place Sat., Jan. 10, at the Golden Gophers' Williams Arena. The Tigers will also travel to California for Fresno State's McCaffrey's Classic Dec. 5-6, facing UC-Irvine in a first-round matchup. The annual meeting with Rutgers is Sat., Dec. 13, in Piscataway, while two separate trips to Baltimore, Md., round out the non-league schedule-against UMBC Dec. 2 and at Loyola (Md.) Dec. 29.
Princeton's non-conference home schedule features three Patriot League opponents-Colgate, in the season opener at Jadwin Gym Nov. 21, two-time defending Patriot champion Holy Cross Nov. 28 and Lafayette on Dec. 22. The Tigers will also host Monmouth at Jadwin Jan. 7 and play their annual post-exam period game against an NCAA Division III opponent, this year Southern Vermont College, on Mon., Jan. 26.
Ivy League play for the Tigers begins on the road, with games at Brown and Yale Jan. 30-31. Princeton plays all seven of its Ivy home games in the month of February before finishing the league season with three road games, including the regular-season finale against Penn at the Palestra on Tues. March 9. Princeton meets the Quakers at Jadwin Gym on Tues., Feb. 10.
Princeton finished the 2002-2003 season 16-11 overall and 10-4 in Ivy League play. The Tigers finished with a winning record in conference play for the 50th straight season, now the longest such streak in NCAA Division I, and won at least 16 games for the 17th year in a row. The Tigers return three starters from last season-honorable-mention all-league selection Judson Wallace as well as guards Ed Persia and Will Venable-and welcome seven newcomers to the team in 2003-2004.
