The Princeton men's soccer team still has a chance to finish as high as second in the Ivy League standings, and the Tigers' quest for that finish begins Saturday night when they make the short trip to Philadelphia to play Penn at 7:30 p.m. at Rhodes Field.
The Tigers (4-7-3, 1-2-1 Ivy) enter Saturday's night's game with a remarkable stretch of success against the Quakers that dates back nearly two decades. Princeton is 17-0-2 against the Quakers in the last 19 meetings between the teams and hasn't lost to Penn since the 1985 season.
Princeton plays its final three games against Ivy League opponents, with Columbia and Yale, both at Lourie-Love Field, also on the schedule. The Tigers would finish with 13 points in the league standings by sweeping their final three games.
Saturday's matchup comes against a Quakers team that was ranked as high as No. 18 nationally earlier this year after a strong start to the season. Penn (9-4-1, 2-2-1 Ivy), like the Tigers, could finish as high as second in the league standings with two wins to end the year.
The Tigers lost a 1-0 non-conference decision against Bucknell Wednesday night at Lourie-Love Field, falling behind early and nearly tying the game twice in the 89th minute. Penn also played at Patriot League opponent Wednesday, American, and came out on the winning end of a 2-0 decision thanks to two goals in the game's first 20 minutes.
Princeton defeated Penn by a 1-0 score at Lourie-Love Field last season. The ties in the series since Penn's last win in 1985 came in 2002 (0-0) and 1987 (2-2).
The Princeton-Penn men's soccer game follows the women's game between the two schools at 5 p.m.
