PHILADELPHIA - When the fourth-ranked Princeton women's lacrosse team puts it all together, the Tigers can sure be dangerous. No. 16 Penn found that out the hard way Wednesday night at Franklin Field.
The Tigers got scoring from five different players, including five goals from Lindsey Biles. Princeton's defense limited Penn to just 16 shots overall and just three in the first half, not to mention harassed the Quakers into 17 turnovers. When it was over, the Tigers had a 12-5 win, their fifth straight victory, and the confidence that comes from a second-straight solid Ivy League performance.
"We've just been really focused at putting everything together for an entire game," said Biles, who became the fourth Princeton player to score 150 career goals with her first goal four minutes into the game. "I think all of us were tired of all of those games where where we didn't put an entire game together."
Princeton (9-2, 4-0 Ivy) allowed the Quakers (6-5, 3-2 Ivy) an early 1-0 lead before beginning a dominant stretch, scoring the next nine goals. Biles had two goals in a three-goal stretch early in the half that gave the Tigers a 3-1 lead, then scored on a spectacular one-on-one move with 11 seconds on the clock to give Princeton a 6-1 halftime lead. Her fourth goal, on a free-position shot with 23 minutes left in the game, gave the Tigers a 9-1 advantage.
Penn would then try to make it interesting, getting two goals in a one-minute span after Biles' goal to make it 9-3 and goals from Rachel Manson and Katie Spofford later in the half to cut its deficit to 9-5. But Ingrid Goldberg's goal with 12 minutes left stopped Penn's run, and the Quakers wouldn't score again. "We played very well for most of the game," said Princeton head coach Chris Sailer. "They made their run at us in the second half, but our transition defense was really good. We did a great job at getting the ball back if we did lose it."
Princeton also got three goals from freshman Katie Lewis-Lamonica, who became the fifth Tiger this year with 10 or more goals, and two goals from Elizabeth Pillion. Goldberg added two assists for the Tigers, who defeated Penn for the 12th straight season.
Emily Cochran and Spofford scored two goals for Penn. Chrissy Muller had two assists for the Quakers.
Princeton held an Ivy League opponent to eight goals or fewer for the fourth time in as many league games this season. The Tigers, who won their 15th straight Ivy League game, have now allowed just 22 goals in four league games.
Sailer again used a two-goalie platoon as she did against Yale Saturday, with sophomore Colleen O'Boyle starting the second half after Sarah Kolodner played the first half. Kolodner, who had five saves, reentered the game with 14:57 left in the second half.
