PHILADELPHIA - Princeton's relay group of Bryan Shields, Dan Saltzman, Rich Stewart and Mike Kopp won the "Heptagonal" 4X400 race at the Penn Relays Friday evening, making the Tigers the favorite at that race at next weekend's Ivy League Heptagonal meet in New York City.
Shields, Saltzman, Stewart and Kopp finished the race, which featured six of the eight Ivy schools, in a time of 3:13.47. Penn was second in 3:14.81 after Cornell, which had timed 3:13.99, was disqualified.
The Tigers had several other competitors at the Relays Friday. High jumper Mike Weishuhn continued a strong season by leaping 2.07 meters (6-9 1/2) in the "Eastern" competition, finishing second in that event.
Kyle Whitaker was 6th in the "Eastern" pole vault competition, leaping 4.60 meters (15-1).
Late Thursday night, Princeton's Frank McCreery ran in the "Olympic Development" 5,000-meter race among some of the nation's top runners, including race winner Alan Webb. McCreery's time of 14:20.60 was good enough for qualification into the IC4A meet at Princeton in two weeks.
