PRINCETON - Columbia head coach Bob Shoop joined Princeton head coach Roger Hughes and junior quarterback Jeff Terrell during Wednesday's weekly media conference. Selected quotes are included from the conference.
Columbia Head Coach Bob Shoop
On facing Princeton on Saturday
"We're looking forward to it. It's a beautiful stadium and they're off to a good start. The last two years, this game has gone down to the final play. The players are looking forward to coming down to play."
On this year's Columbia team (2-0) compared to last year's team (1-9)
"We have unique chemistry, we had a good spring and a physical training camp. The formula for our success has been to build a team around defense, the kicking game and playing penalty-free and turnover-free on offense. But you need to make plays on offense as well and I think we've started to do that this year."
On preparing for Princeton's two-quarterback system
"[Jeff] Terrell has thrown more but there's not much difference in the play calling. There are a lot of weapons on that side of the ball, so it's not just preparing for the quarterback."
On attacking Princeton's defense with Jay McCareins in the secondary
"They have great players like [cornerback J.J.] Artis and [safety Tim] Strickland too. We've seen McCareins dominate the game, like he did against us last year, and he's a nice luxury for defensive coaches to have when you can shut down one side of the field and make the opposition attack the other side."
Princeton Head Coach Roger Hughes
On facing Columbia
"It's the third undefeated opponent we're playing. Columbia is a tough test with the number one defense and pass defense in the league. We're going to have our work cut out for us especially in the fourth quarter. Their defense is going to be a challenge for us this week."
On the difference between this year's teams and past teams that have started strong
"There's not a sense of panic on the sidelines if something goes bad. We've played two pretty good opponents. I don't think Lafayette has lost since we played them and I wouldn't expect San Diego to lose another game this year. The competition we've faced will serve us well this year."
Princeton junior quarterback Jeff Terrell
On playing in the two-quarterback system
"I need to be ready and I need to prepare for every game like I'm going to play every snap. I need to be in rhythm no matter the situation."
