Sophomore Griest Claims Three Events In Split Weekend For Men's Swimming/Diving
November 13, 2006 | Men's Swimming and Diving
Freshman Robert Griest wasted little time proving that his freshman season was no fluke. He claimed three wins over the weekend, including two in Friday's season opener, to help Princeton to a 2-2 weekend in Michigan. The Princeton men's swimming and diving team split both days, defeating Oakland Friday and Michigan State Saturday, but falling to Eastern Michigan Friday and the University of Michigan Saturday.
Griest claimed Princeton's first win of the 2006-07 season with a dominant win in the 1000 free. His time of 9:31.75 was more than five seconds faster than any of his competitors. Stan Buncher and Dave Ashley added third- and fourth-place finishes, respectively.
Senior tri-captain Meir Hasbani took his first win of the season in the 200 butterfly, edging out Oakland's Aaron Holdsworth by .01 of a second. Hasbani, a 2006 All-America honoree, won in 1:51,93, and teammate Dan Eckel wasn't far off the pace with a third-place time of 1:52.60. Griest finished his winning ways on Friday with a victory in the 500 free (4:37.45).
The 400 free relay ended the night with a solid win. The team of Mike Carter, Will Schaffer, Mike Zee and Doug Lennox won in a time of 3:07.23. The win helped Princeton top Oakland136-113, but Eastern Michigan defeated the Tigers 127.5-111.5.
Michigan was dominant in Saturday's tri-meet, defeating Princeton 173-100. Three crucial wins, including one from junior diver Stuart Malcolm, helped the Tigers to a very impressive 152-130 win over Big Ten foe Michigan State.
Malcolm edged freshman teammate Michael Papageorge by less than 1.5 points to win the 1-meter diving competition. Malcolm scored 255.82 points, while Papageorge scored 254.47. Griest came up with his third win over the weekend by taking the 500 free in 4:38.76, and freshman Christopher Quemana claimed his first career win by taking the 200 breast in 2:11.22.
Princeton will head to Ithaca, N.Y., to open its EISL season against Penn and Cornell next weekend.
