Freshman Neha Kumar Claims Constable Invitational
November 26, 2006 | Women's Squash
Freshman Neha Kumar, the leader of a highly touted class of freshmen, made a stirring debut in her first Constable Invitational. The top-seeded Kumar, competing against some of the top players from three of the top programs in the country, held her position and claimed a five-game win in the final match to claim the championship.
Kumar won a pair of three-game matches to advance to the semifinals, where she met fourth seed Sydney Scott of Penn. Like Kumar, Scott is a freshman playing No. 1 for her squad, and she extended the Tiger freshman before Kumar claimed a 9-6, 9-6, 2-9, 9-5 win. That sent Kumar into a final match against another Penn freshman Kristin Lange, who is currently playing No. 2 for the Quakers and who made it into the final despite being unseeded. The two put together a terrific final, and Kumar came away with the title in a 6-9, 9-2, 9-3, 0-9, 9-7. Lange reached the finals by taking out three of Princeton's top players; she beat Casey Riley 9-2, 9-2, 9-4, No. 2 Claire Rein-Weston 9-6, 9-3, 9-1 in the second round and No. 3 Amanda Siebert 9-3, 4-9, 9-0, 9-6 in the semifinal.
Riley came back to run through the consolation draw, which concluded with a 9-1, 9-2, 9-1 win in the final. Carly Grabowski also competed, but fell in the second round of the consolation draw.
