Women's Swimming & Diving Looks For Sweet 16th Ivy League Championship
February 23, 2006 | Women's Swimming and Diving
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - When Princeton won five straight Ivy League women's swimming and diving titles between 2000 and 2004, the rest of the league knew it would need a near-perfect weekend to have any chance at unseating the favorite. The Tigers now know that feeling, as they challenge defending champ Harvard in Cambridge, Mass., this weekend for the 2006 Ivy League championship.
At the bottom of this story will be a link to follow the weekend events, including real-time results and psych sheets, as it unfolds.
Princeton enters the weekend with a 6-2 record, including a 6-1 mark in the Ivy League. The Tigers were fairly dominant in their six wins, but they suffered a tough 203-116 loss to Harvard during a midseason tri-meet with Yale. Ellen Gray, Lisa Hamming, Charlotte Jones and Brett Shiflett all won individual events in that meet with Harvard, but the Crimson won 11 straight events at one point to claim full control of the meet.
Of course, in a championship format, depth will be critical to each team, and it's there that Princeton hopes to make up some ground against Harvard. The Tigers return eight swimmers who had top-5 finishes at the 2005 Ivy League championships, including Shiflett, the defending champion in the 200 free.
The championships will be decided over three days, with each day broken into afternoon preliminaries and evening finals. Most events will have a third-place final, a consolation final and a championship final.
Heat sheets are already available for Thursday's events, as well as directions to Harvard's Blodgett Pool and a schedule of events.
