NEW YORK - Princeton coach Chris Sailer was certainly glad to get the 250th win of her coaching career Wednesday night against Columbia. But for a Tiger team coming off a difficult previous week, it was simply important to get a win.
Kathleen Miller and Holly McGarvie each scored four times, and Katie Lewis-Lamonica had two goals and two assists, as the No. 8 Tigers defeated Columbia 16-7 in their Ivy League opener at Wien Stadium.
The win improved Princeton to 3-4 overall and 9-0 all-time against Columbia (4-4, 0-3 Ivy). The Tigers have outscored the Lions 147-25 in those nine meetings.
Sailer, the second-winningest active coach in NCAA Division I behind Maryland's Cindy Timchal, is now 250-82 in 19-plus seasons as Princeton's head coach.
"I've had the good fortune to coach a lot of great players who were even better people," said Sailer, who took over at Princeton in 1987 and has since led the Tigers to three NCAA championships, 11 final fours and 14 NCAA tournaments since. "Hopefully, getting No. 251 will be a little easier than No. 250 was," she joked.
Sailer's teams have also won eight Ivy League championships. The Tigers play the only other Ivy unbeaten so far, 2-0 Cornell, at Class of 1952 Stadium Saturday at noon.
"We got contributions from a lot of different people tonight," said Sailer. "Hopefully we can use this as a springboard to success as we move on from here." Princeton took a double-digit lead during the second half, leading to a running clock, before Columbia scored twice late in the game.
The game was tied early at 2-2 before two consecutive goals by Miller made it 4-2 Princeton midway through the half. Goals by Miller and McGarvie in the final two minutes of the half made it 8-4 Princeton at halftime.
Princeton then scored the first four goals of the second half, the final two coming from Lewis-Lamonica, to take a 12-4 lead. The first career goal from defender Marie McKenna with just under 10 minutes left gave the Tigers their biggest lead at 16-5.
The Tigers outshot the Lions 34-17 and won 18 of the game's 26 draw controls.
