Terriers Top Women's Soccer in Season Opener
September 02, 2006 | Women's Soccer
WEST WINDSOR -- A soggy day and a pair of goals from Boston University's Lauren Basham led the Terriers to a 2-0 win over Princeton in the Tigers' 2006 season opener. The contest was held at Mercer County Community College's turf field after two days of rain on Princeton's familiar on-campus home at Lourie-Love Field.
BU outshot Princeton 9-5 while the Tigers struggled to create and convert on scoring chances. The Orange and Black mustered a few intriguing opportunities during a wet 90 minutes, including a two-on-one situation in which Marci Pasenello and Allison Williams faced Terrier keeper Stephanie Dreyer in the 34th minute only to have Dreyer snuff it out with a slide tackle.
Boston's first goal came in the 30th minute when Lauren Erwin sent a pass ahead fo Basham at Tiger keeper Maren Dale's right. Basham had beaten her defender and put an all but indefensible shot on Dale that found the back of the net.
Again in the 61st minute, Basham found herself one-on-one with Dale. Basham took control of a loose ball inside the six-yard box and knocked it in for a 2-0 Terrier lead.
The loss is the first in a 10-season, seven-game series for Princeton against Boston University. It also snaps the five-game winning streak with which Princeton ended the 2005 campaign.
Four Tigers made their career debut Saturday including Pasenello, Melissa Seitz, Vicki Anagnostopoulos and Caitlin Alev, who started. Anagnostopoulos had two of Princeton's five shots.
The Tigers return to the field Friday, Sept. 8 at Penn for the start of a two-game weekend with Richmond and Hofstra.
