McAndrew Leads Brown to 63-48 Win over Princeton in Men's Basketball
February 03, 2007 | Men's Basketball
First, Princeton went cold from the field. Then, Brown's Mark McAndrew got hot from behind the arc. The ultimate result was a decisive second half by the Bears on the way to a home win.
The Tigers went without a field goal for the first seven minutes of the second half and McAndrew then made three three-pointers in a two-minute span to turn a two-point lead into an double-digit advantage as the Bears defeated Princeton, 63-48, before 1,231 at the PIzzitola Center Saturday night.
Despite missing their first four shots of the second half and Brown using a 12-0 run that spanned halftime to take the lead, the Tigers (9-9, 0-4 Ivy) were back within two at 34-32 with 9:30 left when Marcus Schroeder hit a three-point shot. But McAndrew then took over, knocking down all three of his trifectas in the next two minutes to give the Bears (7-14, 2-4 Ivy) a 43-32 lead.
Princeton, which was led by Luke Owings' 12 points, would not get closer than seven points in the rest of the way.
McAndrew scored a game-high 19 points for Brown, which defeated the Tigers for the second straight time. Damon Huffman added 17 points for the Bears, who shot 53% from the field (19 for 36) for the game.
The Tigers, who lost their fifth straight game, led by as many as seven points in the first half before Brown made its game-changing 12-0 run beginning late in the first half. Trailing 23-22 at halftime, the Bears would score the first eight points of the second half, taking a 30-23 lead on a putback by Mark MacDonald with 14:32 left.
Princeton then cut its deficit to two points with a 9-4 spurt in the next five minutes that concluded with Schroeder's three-point shot.
Schroeder tied a season high with 10 points for Princeton, which made six of 12 three-point shots in the first half but just three of 13 three-point attempts in the final 20 minutes.
Brown outrebounded the Tigers 33-15, including 10-3 on the offensive glass. The Bears, who shot 62% in the decisive second half, ended a three-game losing skid with the win.
McAndrew, who earlier in the season scored 27 points in the second half in a win at first-place Yale, also had six rebounds and five assists for Brown. The game was the first against Princeton for Brown coach Craig Robinson, a two-time Ivy Player of the Year at Princeton before graduating in 1983.
Princeton led 9-2 five minutes into the game, but the Bears then scored seven straight in the next five minutes to tie the game on two McAndrew free throws. The Tigers never trailed until Huffman put his team up for good with a layup 45 seconds into the second half.
The Tigers will play seven of their final 10 games at home, beginning with a Friday night game against Harvard at 7:30 at Jadwin Gym. The game will be televised live by Patriot 8.
