Men's Hockey Picked First in ECAC Preseason Coaches and Media Polls
September 22, 2008 | Men's Ice Hockey
The Princeton men's hockey team was picked to finish first in the ECAC Hockey preseason coaches and media polls announced Monday afternoon as part of the league's media day. Princeton is the defending ECAC Hockey tournament champion after being chosen eighth in last season's preseason poll.
The Tigers received nine first-place votes from the coaches and 118 total points to be ranked atop the preseason coaches poll. Harvard received two votes and was second, while Cornell got the final first-pace vote and ranked third. Last year's regular season champion Clarkson took the fourth spot. Princeton was also atop the media poll, this time taking 15 first-place votes and 278 points. Harvard, Cornell and Clarkson again made up the top-four positions. It is the first time that Princeton has been selected atop either poll.
Princeton returns 21 players off of last season's championship squad. The Tigers return nine of their top 10 scorers, including reigning league Player of the Year Lee Jubinville and second team all-ecac selection Brett Wilson. Jubinville, Wilson and Cam MacIntyre give Princeton three players that finished last season with more than 30 points. The Tigers have 12 returning players that reached double digits in points last season.
In addition to the polls, the ECAC announced the coaches and media preseason all-league teams. Princeton placed two players, goalkeeper Zane Kalemba and Jubinville, on the team. Kalemba was the ECAC Tournament Most Outstanding Player last March and was 19-11 last season with five shutouts. Jubinville was the ECAC and Ivy League Player of the Year and a first-team All-America as he scored 39 points to lead the team and won the conference-scoring race. Jubinville was also named to the media team.
Princeton opens the season with an IntraSquad game on Oct. 19 and have an exhibition game at home on Oct. 25. The Tigers open the regular season on Oct. 31 at Brown.
