October 25, 2009 | Men's Ice Hockey
PRINCETON (10/25/09) -- Mark Thoburn scored a hat trick to lead Windsor to a 5-3 win over the Princeton men's hockey team on Sunday afternoon at Hobey Baker Rink in exhibition action. Sophomore Marc Hagel assisted on Princeton's first two goals.
Windsor netted the only goal of the first period when Mark Thoburn opened the scoring 2:32 into the game as the Lancers converted on a turnover in the Princeton zone.
Princeton evened the score in the first minute of the second period when freshman Eric Meland scored his second exhibition goal of the season. He carried the puck off the wall before picking the top corner on the stick side of Windsor goaltender Jim Watt.
Thoburn answered two minutes later for Windsor, putting in the rebound of a Kyle Lang shot that went wide and caromed off the end boards to Thoburn. Princeton again evened the scored in the 12th minute when senior Tyler Beachell scored on a backhander after coming out from behind the net.
Windsor scored the go-ahead goal with six seconds left in the period skating with a two-man advantage. Brett Oliphant hit Thoburn with a pass on the far-post that he put into the goal for the 3-2 lead.
Windsor gained a two-goal lead in the sixth minute of the third period from Scott Todd, but the Tigers moved back within a goal after junior Sam Sabky scored, shooting on a 2 on 1. Princeton pulled junior goaltender Alan Reynolds looking to tie the game, but Brett Vandehogen completed the scoring with an empty-net goal.
Jim Watt made 46 saves in the win, while Reynolds took the loss, making seven saves in the final period.
Princeton opens the 2009-10 season next Friday afternoon against Brown at 4 p.m., at Hobey Baker Rink.
