November 20, 2009 | Men's Fencing, Women's Fencing
PRINCETON -- Freshman Phoebe Caldwell led a contingent of eight Princeton fencers at the second North American Cup event in Kansas City earlier this month.
The competition, which ran Nov. 6-9, is one of six NAC events that will award points to high finishers toward competing on the U.S. team at world championship events. The next NAC competition is Dec. 4-6 in Pittsburgh.
Caldwell finished second of 142 competitors in the under-20 women's epee, while sophomore teammate Susannah Scanlan placed 17th and freshman Hannah Safford placed 18th. In the men's epee, freshman Jonathan Yergler was 15th of 194 fencers, while fellow rookie Edward Kelley placed 28th and sophomore Cooper Gegan was 35th. In the women's foil, freshman Brianna Martin placed 39th of 122 fencers, while sophomore Lucile Jarry was 44th.
As a team, the Tigers will open their season at Penn State's Garret Open, which runs Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 21-22. The event, which has begun Princeton's schedule for the last several years, is based solely on individual performances with no team score.
