Men's Volleyball Shows Support During Dig Pink Weekend, Prepares For Fall Tourney
November 04, 2009 | Men's Volleyball
While the Princeton women's volleyball team swept Cornell and Columbia during the Oct. 23-24 Dig Pink Weekend, the Tigers received a nice assist from their male counterparts. From assisting in the design of a t-shirt for the home weekend to the event operation support, the men's program helped provide a winning weekend overall for Princeton and the Dig Pink cause.
Dig Pink is a Breast Cancer Awareness Rally being held all of October to raise awareness and funds. Every year awareness for the need for Breast Cancer research is created by holding hundreds, and some years even thousands, of High School and College volleyball matches across the country to help educate and raise funds to eradicate this terrible disease. Proceeds go towards doing something significant and identifiable in the fight against Breast Cancer.
Men's co-captain Carl Hamming and women's co-captain Taylor Carroll were instrumental in the design of the t-shirt.
“The Dig Pink Weekend was a great opportunity for the men's team to support the women's team and a great cause," said Hamming, one of three returning starters from a young and talented men's squad, which will be led in 2010 by new head coach Sam Shweisky. "The men's team wanted to do something to display our commitment to the cause and help the fight against breast cancer by helping raise awareness and funds”
Princeton was able to raise $870 for the worthy cause over the course of the weekend.
“I was really proud of the guys for coming up with the idea to design the t-shirt and for organizing the event.” said Shweisky, who serves as the assistant coach for a women's program that has won four of its last five matches. “The guys are really being proactive in reaching out for community service based projects. It's been very encouraging to see that kind of initiative.”
Fans of the men's volleyball team won't have to wait until February to see their team in action. On Saturday, Nov. 21, Princeton will host the inaugural Dillon Fall Classic. Teams in attendance will include New Paltz, Hunter, NJIT, Stevens Tech, New Haven Alumni and Creole, which is a club team from N.Y.. Admission is free and play will begin at 10 a.m.
