Ivy League Season Gets Underway on Saturday For Princeton Women's Lacrosse

PRINCETON, N.J. (3/27/09) - The Ivy League season gets underway for the Princeton women's lacrosse team on Saturday, March 28 when it travels to Cornell for a 3 p.m., match.
Fans who can't make it to Ithaca, N.Y., can catch the game on Cornell's RedCast for a cost of $5.95. Live stats will also be made available free of charge.
Princeton leads the all-time series with Cornell, which began in 1980, 28-2. The Tigers have won the last 21 meetings including a 19-10 win last season. When playing in Ithaca, the Tigers are 12-1 with the lone loss coming in 1988, an 8-2 decision.
Princeton, ranked No. 7 in the country, sports a 6-1 record on the season, defeating four ranked teams along the way and its lone loss at No. 4 Duke by one goal. Most recently the Tigers defeated Temple, 13-4, to improve its home mark to 4-0.
After a seven-point effort against Temple, sophomore Lizzy Drumm is now atop the scoring column with a team-high 16 goals and five helpers for 21 points. Senior Holly McGarvie has a team-best eight assists to go along with 11 goals for 19 points. Senior Christine Casaceli has 15 points, junior Kristin Morrison has 14 and seniors Kristin Schwab and Sarah Steele have 11 and 10, respecitvely. McGarvie leads the Tigers in three supplemental statistical catergories. She has 22 ground balls, 23 draw controls and 14 caused turnovers, all team bests. Sophomore Erin Tochihara has a 6-1 record as the team's starting goalie. She has a 7.96 goals against average and leads the nation with a .586 save percentage.
Cornell owns a 5-2 overall record and is 1-1 in Ivy League play and is ranked No. 19 in the nation. The Big Red began the season with a five-game winning streak before getting tripped up by Loyola, 16-9, and Penn, 14-2 last week. The team is undefeated when playing at Schoellkopf Field, at 3-0.
Jessica Steinberg is the squad's leading scorer with 10 goals and a team-high nine assists for 19 points. Jessica Wiegand and Kate Dewey each have a team-high 11 goals, with Weigand adding four assists for 15 points. Libby Johnson is also among the top scorers with 14 points. Katie Kirk leads the Big Red in ground balls with 16 and has 14 draw controls, while Tissy O'Connor is the team's draw control leader with 17. Deirdre Lafferty has broken up 16 possessions, the most on the team. Kristen Reese has started all six games and has a 9.42 goals against average and a .439 save percentage, stopping 47 of 107 shots.
