PRINCETON -- Princeton opened the 2010 softball season Friday with a pair of losses at Maryland's tournament, seeing Mount St. Mary's rally past the Tigers 5-4 in eight innings before the host Terrapins defeated the Tigers 9-0.
Mount St. Mary's 5, Princeton 4 (8 innings)
The Mountaineers (7-1) scored three runs in the eighth to rally past Princeton, 5-4.
Junior Megan Weidrick's two-run triple in the fourth inning let Princeton take a 2-1 lead, but Mount St. Mary's manufactured a run against senior pitcher Jamie Lettire in the fifth to tie it.
With a runner on second because of the international tiebreaker rule in extra innings, Princeton got a pair of RBI singles from rookie Alex Peyton and Weidrick to pull ahead 4-2. Mount St. Mary's also took advantage of the tiebreaker rule to start a three-run eighth inning in which the Mountaineers got three runs on three hits without making an out.
The game featured four freshmen among Princeton's 10 starters. Lettire, Weidrick and Peyton each had two hits.
Maryland 9, Princeton 0
Maryland sophomore Kendra Knight kept the Tigers quiet on offense as Lettire picked up the only hit in a 9-0 loss to the Terrapins.
Princeton's two rookie pitchers, Alex Peyton and Liza Kuhn, took their turn in the circle and combined for eight earned runs and 12 hits allowed.
The Terrapins' (4-6) lead was just 1-0 until the fifth, when Peyton gave up two home runs to allow Maryland to take a 5-0 lead. The host team picked up four more in the seventh to make the 9-0 final.
Princeton will face the same two teams Saturday, starting with Mount St. Mary's at 12:30 p.m. and Maryland at 5:30 p.m.
