Women's Swimming/Diving Sweeps Ivy Season With 196-104 Win At Columbia
February 05, 2011 | Women's Swimming and Diving
With two individual wins apiece by junior Jillian Altenburger and freshman Andrea Kropp, the Princeton women's swimming and diving team completed its fifth straight perfect Ivy League season with a 196-104 at Columbia.
The win is Princeton's 38th in a row and gives the team plenty of momentum as it heads into the 2011 Ivy League Championship meet, which will be held Feb. 24-26 at DeNunzio Pool. Princeton has won nine of the last 11 Ivy League titles, including a thrilling 27-point victory last year.
The session opened with the three-meter diving competition, and freshman Rachel Zambrowicz won the event with 283.20 points. It was Zambrowicz' second win in three weeks; she also picked up a victory in the home win over Dartmouth.
The first swimming event was the 200 medley relay, which Princeton won when the team of freshmen Lisa Boyce and Kropp joined sophomore Carter Stephens and senior Megan Waters for a winning time of 1:45.14.
Columbia's Grace Senko won a tight battle with freshman Rebecca Lewinson in the 200 IM, with Lewinson taking second in 2:10.05. Princeton got back on the winning track with a 1-2 finish in the 200 free; junior Aislinn Smalling won the event in 1:53.53, a razor thin advantage over second-place sophomore Sarah Furgatch, who finished in 1:53.59.
Waters followed with a win in the 100 back in 57.87, while junior Leslie Bargmann took second in 1:00.85. Fellow junior Altenburger followed with a win in the 100 breast (1:07.59), while teammate Lewinson took second in 1:08.07.
Yet another 1-2 finish came in the 200 fly, as Kropp won in 2:01.82 and sophomore Kathy Qu placed second in 2:09.00. Stephens won the 50 free in 24.44, and Christina Kirkwood won the one-meter diving competition with 267.75 points. Qu won the 100 free in 53.41, while Smalling (53.42) and Stephens (53.52) followed closely for an exciting 1-2-3 Tiger finish.
Senior co-captain Ming Ong placed second in the 200 back (2:06.00), while Furgatch took second in the 200 breast (2:26.05). Princeton wasn't about to lose three straight events, especially one week after sweeping every event in the annual H-Y-P meet. Altenburger won her second event of the day by winning the 500 free in 4:57.33, more than seven seconds faster than freshman teammate Maureen McCotter, who took second in 5:04.82. Bargmann edged Boyce for the win in the 100 fly (57.84 to 58.46), while Kropp won the 100 IM in 1:00.15. Princeton took the top four spots in the 100 IM, with Wang (1:00.26), Kerry Gruendel (1:01.12) and Alexa Powers (1:01.82) following Kropp.
The meet ended with the 200 free relay, and Princeton took second when the quartet of Stephens, Qu, Laura Slater and Altenburger took second in the 200 free relay in 1:37.80.
