PVC To Honor John McPhee, Joe Baker At Annual Banquet
May 24, 2011 | General
The Princeton Varsity Club will present John McPhee '53 with the Marvin Bressler Award, and Joe Baker '91 with the Class of 1967 PVC Citizen-Athlete Award at its 14th Annual PVC Awards Banquet at its annual senior-athlete banquet this Thursday, May 26.
The year-end, capstone event celebrates the accomplishments of individual members of the Princeton Athletics community, including alumni, student-athletes, friends, and staff, as well as the Class of 2011 as a whole. This year's iteration will be held at the base of Cleveland Tower at Princeton's Graduate College.
John McPhee '53 will receive the Marvin Bressler Award as a member of the Princeton family who, through heartfelt support of the University's student-athletes and coaches, best embodies a belief in the lifelong lessons taught by competition and athletics as a complement to the overall educational mission. McPhee has been the Ferris Professor of Journalism at Princeton since 1974, and is an Academic-Athletic Fellow for the Men's Lacrosse team. The first of his 27 published works, A Sense of Where You Are, was a profile of then-Princeton senior and Men's Basketball Consensus All-American Bill Bradley '65. McPhee was born and raised in Princeton, attending Princeton High School and the University. In addition to his roles at Princeton, McPhee has been a staff writer with the New Yorker since 1965.
Joe Baker '91 is the 2011 recipient of the Class of 1967 PVC Citizen-Athlete Award, presented for selfless and noble contributions to sport and society. A history major at Princeton, Baker was a wide receiver on the football team and was a member of the 1989 team that won a share of the Ivy League Championship. In 1997, Baker and several other former Princeton student-athletes co-founded PlaySmart, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing quality sport programs to children from low-income backgrounds. He currently serves on the PlaySmart Board of Directors while working as the Linebackers Coach for the NFL's Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
In addition to the Marvin Bressler and Class of 1967 PVC Citizen-Athlete Awards, The C. Otto von Kienbusch Award, the William Winston Roper Trophy, the Art Lane '34 Award, and the Class of 1916 Cup will also be awarded at the banquet.
