Two undefeateds go head-to-head on Wednesday night as the Princeton men's soccer team travels to No. 15-ranked St. Johns for an 8 p.m. game.
Princeton is 1-0 on the season after a 2-1 win in the season opener on Friday against Seton Hall. Senior Matt Sanner and sophomore Julian Griggs both scored, while freshman Thomas Sanner assisted on both games. He was awarded Ivy League Rookie of the Week for his efforts. Senior Max Gallin earned the start in goal and matched his personal best of nine saves against the Pirates.
The teams have faced each other four times in the last decade. St. John's took a 3-2 double overtime game last year and won 1-0 in 2006. The team's tied 1-1 in both 2009 and 2007.
The Red Storm already played three games before Princeton saw the pitch. They defeated Boston University 3-0 at home, followed by a 1-1 tie with Colgate at home. This past weekend St. John's competed at the Gamecock Classic and defeated host South Carolina 2-0 and Kentucky 2-1. St. John's averages 13.2 shots per game and holds teams 8.2. The team averages more than eight corner kicks per game and has given up just 3.5 per game. Jack Bennett, Andres Vargas and Nick Matthews are all tied atop the scoring column with five points apiece on two goals and one assist. Jelani Williams adds a goal and an assist, and Juan Aguiar has one goal. Rafael Diaz has played every minute in goal. With 14 saves and two goals allowed, Diaz owns a 0.47 GAA and an .875 save percentage.
