WEEK 4 HIGHLIGHTS
The 4-0 Princeton football team claimed its first individual honor of the season Monday, as freshman Charles Volker claimed the Ivy League Rookie of the Week award.
Volker scored his first collegiate touchdown late in Princeton's 44-20 victory over Colgate, and he did so in explosive style. The former New Jersey state high school champion in the 100, Volker broke through the line and sprinted away from three Colgate defenders en route to the score. The 62-yard touchdown run was the longest rush during Bob Surace's 5+ years as head coach; the last Tiger to record a longer run was Tommy Wornham (68) during a 2009 game at Lehigh.
While Volker may have had the most spectacular play (which you can see by clicking on the highlights, which are available above), several freshmen had roles in Princeton's first win ove Colgate since 2006. Both wideouts Alex Parkinson and Jesper Horsted caught their first two collegiate passes, while fullback Cody Smith also recorded a catch.
Four freshmen on the defensive line saw time during the game, including Edward Rudinski, who recorded his second sack in as many games and ties three other Princeton players for the team lead.
"I'm excited for Charles to earn this recognition, and I'm even more excited to see what kind of player he can become in this league," Surace said. "He has a long way to go overall, but his burst and speed are impressive. We had a lot of freshmen play in important spots Saturday, and I loved the way they handled it. The moment wasn't too big for them."
Volker is Princeton's first Ivy League Rookie of the Week since Dorian Williams won the honor on Oct. 21, 2013.
