PRINCETON, N.J. – Fresh off another successful season, the Princeton University field hockey team placed five players on the 2015 Longstreth/NFHCA Division I All-Region squads.
Helping the Tigers to an 11-7 record and the program's 14th national quarterfinal appearance, Cat Caro, Maddie Copeland, Sophia Tornetta, and Elise Wong were each named to the Mid-Atlantic first team while Teresa Benvenuti earned a spot on the second team.
Putting together a breakout season, Copeland finished sixth in the nation in goals per game (0.89) and 15th in points per contest (1.89). Factoring into the scoring in 10 of the team's 18 games, Copeland's 16 goals and 34 points ranked second and third in the Ivy League, respectively.
Recently named the conference's Offensive Player of the Year, Copeland earned three Ivy Player of the Week awards this season. Closing out a stellar four-year run, Copeland finished out her career with 71 points on 34 goals and three assists.
The Ivy League's Rookie of the Year, Tornetta ranks second on the squad in points (23) with seven goals and nine assists. Garnering a pair of Rookie of the Week accolades, Tornetta picked up her first career points with a goal in the season opener against North Carolina. Recording a point in each of her first five collegiate outings, Tornetta factored into the scoring in 11 of her appearances. Helping to lead the Tigers to a 3-1 NCAA first round win over Maryland, Tornetta netted two of Princeton's three scores.
Serving as the team's lone captain, Caro was a second team All-Ivy selection in 2015. Playing all 18 games, Caro collected 14 points on five goals and four assists. Getting off to a fast start, Caro collected seven points in her first four games on three goals and an assist. Caro also found the back of the opposing cage in the Tigers' NCAA victory over Maryland.
Turning in a stellar freshman season, Wong finished third on the team in assists (6) and also earned first-team All-Ivy honors. Helping to anchor Princeton's defensive efforts, Wong and the Tigers' backline posted three shutouts on the year and allowed just 1.4 goals per game against Ivy opponents. In a 4-0 victory over Yale, Princeton did not surrender a shot, becoming the first squad to accomplish the feat in head coach Kristen Holmes-Winn's 13-year tenure.
Putting the finishing touches on a decorated career, Benvenuti dished out the fifth-most assists (11) in the Ivy League. Factoring into the scoring in eight games, Benvenuti matched a single-game program record with four assists against Dartmouth on Sept. 27. Dishing out a pair of helpers in an overtime win over Columbia (Oct. 9), Benvenuti had three more helpers in the Tigers' final two regular season games against Cornell (Oct. 31) and Penn (Nov. 7).
