Gregoire Named MAC Hermann Trophy Semifinalist
November 28, 2017 | Women's Soccer
Vanessa Gregoire helped the Princeton women's soccer team to the NCAA quarterfinals after earning Ivy League Co-Offensive Player of the Year honors during her senior season, and now she's recognized as one of 15 semifinalists for the MAC Hermann Trophy, college soccer's top honor.
The leader in career assists in program history, with 27, Gregoire became Princeton's third Ivy Offensive Player of the Year in the last four seasons, and it's the second time in three years that a Princeton player has been named a MAC Hermann Trophy semifinalist. Tyler Lussi '17 won the Ivy Offensive Player of the Year honor in 2014 and 2015 and was on the semifinalist list two years ago as the Tigers won their second of what is now three straight NCAA tournament first-round games.
Gregoire's record-breaking 27th career assist came on freshman Carolyne Davidson's goal in a 1-1 tie against No. 21 N.C. State in the NCAA second round in which the Tigers advanced 5-4 in a penalty-kick shootout. Two days later, the Tigers beat No. 2 North Carolina 2-1 before Saturday's 3-1 quarterfinal loss at No. 4 UCLA. The weekend in North Carolina marked the second and third times, after a first-round win in 2012 at West Virginia, that Princeton advanced in NCAA tournament games held away from Princeton.
Gregoire scored three goals this season and had an Ivy-best eight assists, with three of the helpers coming in the NCAA tournament.
The rest of the semifinalist list included West Virginia senior forward Michaela Abam, Georgetown senior midfielder Rachel Corboz, Stanford sophomore defender Tierna Davidson, Duke senior forward Imani Dorsey, South Carolina sophomore defender Grace Fisk, UCLA sophomore midfielder Jessie Fleming, Cal senior defender Indigo Gibson, Stanford freshman forward Catarina Macario, UCLA junior forward Hailie Mace, South Carolina senior forward Savannah McCaskill, Rutgers junior keeper Casey Murphy, Duke senior midfielder Rebecca Quinn, Stanford senior midfielder Andi Sullivan, and Pepperdine senior midfielder Brianna Visalli.
The semifinalist list will be narrowed to three finalists to be announced Dec. 8.
