Princeton Names Robinson and Weledji Captains for 2017-18 Season
November 06, 2017 | Women's Basketball
Princeton, N.J – Head coach Courtney Banghart has announced that Leslie Robinson and Tia Weledji have been named captains for the 2017-18 season.
Â
In all my years in competitive athletics, I've seen over and over again that leadership is the great separator between good and great teams," said Banghart. "Both Leslie and Tia are servant and consistent leaders. They walk the walk, they bring along others, and they are deeply committed to the success of this team. Being named a captain at any level is undoubtedly a huge honor. These two competitors and teammates should be proud that they've earned the trust of their teammates that they, along with their fellow senior Kenya Holland, are well suited to lead this team. I'm looking forward to supporting, challenging, and celebrating them as they lead this team to success."
Â
Robinson had a breakout junior campaign in 2016-17 as she finished with career highs in points (10.4), rebounds (7.6) and assists (2.8) per game. She was selected to the second team All-Ivy and Ivy League All-Tournament Team. She was second in the conference in the Ivy League in field goal percentage (48.1), third in offensive rebounds (77), sixth in total rebounds (221), seventh in assists (82), eighth in defensive rebounds (144) and 10th in field goals (130).
Â
Weledji played in every game last year and saw a jump in every offensive category. She averaged 5.8 points and 3.1 rebounds per game in 2016-17. She had a personal-best 20 points along with seven rebounds vs. Lafayette (Dec. 7) before a sparkling performance vs. Wagner (Dec. 21), going 8-of-12 from the floor (66.7 percent), dropping in 19 points. Some other stellar outings include games against Brown (Jan. 13) and Yale (Jan. 14), where she combined for 33 points on 13-of-29 (44.8 percent) shooting.
Â
The Tigers are looking for its ninth straight postseason trip in 2017-18. Princeton gets the season underway on Friday (6:30 p.m.) vs. George Washington at Jadwin Gym.
