NEW YORK, N.Y. (2/26/17) - The relay of Jackie Berardo, Zoe Sims, Anna Jurew and Katie Hanss brought home a victory in the 4x800, as the Princeton women's track & field team tied four fourth place at the 2017 Ivy League Indoor Heptagonal Championships scoring 81 points.
Princeton entered the day with the lead after collecting 31 points. Six Tigers scored yesterday, including Julia Ratcliffe and Allison Harris, who earned victories in their respective events. Princeton saw its lead slip away as Harvard gained the the one point it needed to supercede Princeton in the second event of the afternoon. The Tigers kept battling and scored in five of the six finals it qualified for, as well as two field events and the 5k.
Highlighting the day was the victory by the 4x800. The Tigers were in second place after Berardo's lead-off leg of 2:14.431, Sims crushed a 2:09.835 as the second leg as the Tigers were just behind Columbia. Jurew put her team in the driver's seat with the fastest third-leg split of 2:10.011. The hand off to anchor Hanss had the team in the lead at 6:34.27 before Hanss closed with a 2:09.178 to finish more than two seconds ahead of Penn 8:43.46 to 8:45.54. The time is the third fastest-time in school history in the 4x800, behind the 2013 and 2011 Heps relay quads.
Hanss and Sims had brought six points to the team total earlier in the day as both scored in the 1,000. Hanss ran 2:50.79 while Sims was right behind at 2:50.81 as the duo went 4-5 in the event.
Jurew also had a big day as she ran a lifetime best in the 800 of 2:10.28 (33.55, 32.41, 32.33, 31.97). She earned two more points for the Tigers with a fifth-place finish.
Sophomore Alie Fordyce began the day with a sixth-place finish in the mile to bring her team a point. She ran 4:52.12, while junior Delaney Miller just missed a scoring spot with a 4:53.09 for seventh place.
In the 60-meter hurdles as Harris finished seventh at 8.79, while Ellie Randolph was eight at 8.90. Randolph was a scorer in the long jump yesterday, coming within one centimeter of the school record – while Harris matched her meet record in the pole vault.
Both Tigers in the 400 finals scored points as freshman Heide Baron was fourth at 56.50 and freshman Ashley Willingham was sixth at 57.06 – a big effort in their first Ivy Heps. Baron's time, as a personal record, ranks as the ninth best time in school history in the 400.
Sophomore Elisa Steele put up a PR of 1:12.96 in the 500 to take third place. Steele, who has PR'ed in every 500 race she has competed in this season, has shaved nearly three seconds off the time she had when she entered the season at 1:15.67. Steele's time in the third fastest in school history behind two 500m Ivy Heps champions Cecilia Barowski '16 and Kim Mackay '15.
Kennedy O'Dell released her best career throw in the shot put at 14.14 (46-4.75). The fourth best throw ever by a Tiger came on her final attempt in the shot put as she finished the weekend earning six points all on her own – with two in the shot and four in the weight throw.
Sophomore Allie Klimkiewicz became an Ivy Heps scorer as she had a great run in the 5k. She ran the 25 laps in 16:36.06 to take fifth place. It was the first time this season she or any Tiger ran the 5k.
The Tigers earn points in all three relays. Prior to the win in the 4x800, the relay of freshman Madeleine Sumner, Maia Craver, Alie Fordyce and Lizzie Bird took fourth in the distance medley relay at 11:27.43. Sumner led off with a 3:31.057in the 1200 and Craver gave Princeton a bigger cushion with a 55.954 in the 400. Fordyce continued to keep Princeton in front after her 800 leg of 2:13.480. Bird anchored a 4:46.940 in the 1600, after she finished third in the 3k yesterday, as she was fourth across the line with the baton. The time of 11:27.43 is the ninth fastest DMR ever run by a Princeton relay.
In the final event on the track, the 4x400 placed fourth at 3:48.02 to earn four more points. Baron led off with a 58.121 before handing off to Willingham. Willingham moved the Tigers up two places into fourth with a leg of 57.645. Sophomore Carly Bonnet ran the second-fastest third leg with a time of 56.596, while the Tiger remained in fourth place. Steele anchored a 55.652 to keep her team in fourth place and score for the squad. Just like the other relays, the 4x400 also ran a top-10 time as 3:48.02 ranks as the eighth-best 4x400 time in school history.
