EYE ON THE TIGERS
Princeton is making its 25th NCAA Tournament appearance, as the No. 5 seed. The Tigers won the Ivy League Tournament to earn the league's automatic bid. Princeton is 14-3 overall and is ranked No. 5 in both the IWLCA and Inside Lacrosse polls, and is ranked third in the NCAA RPI.
The Orange & Black average 14.88 goals per game, the 12th best scoring offense in the country and limit teams to 9.76 goals per game. Princeton ranks seventh in the NCAA in assists, as 52 percent of its goals have been set up.
The Ivy League Attacker of the Year and Tewaaraton Top-25 nominee Olivia Hompe paces the offense. She is the NCAA leader in goals per game and third in the nation in points per game, as she has 70 goals and 103 points- both single-season records. Last weekend she became Princeton's all-time leading scorer and goal scorer with 278 career points and 193 career goals. What makes Princeton's offense so special is having other options, as five additional players have scored 20 or more goal this season including freshman Tess D'Orsi, senior Anna Doherty, juniors Elizabeth George and Ellie McNulty and Kathryn Hallett. Junior Colby Chanenchuk is second on the team in scoring with a Princeton record of 36 assists in addition to 13 goals. George is the team leader in draw controls with 34. Senior defender Madeline Rodriguez has 31 draws, 17 caused turnovers - second to Amanda Leavell's 21. Leavell has a team-best 34 ground balls, followed by Hompe with 31. In goal is Tewaaraton Top-25 nominee and the 2016 NCAA DI Goalie of the Year, senior Ellie DeGarmo. For the second straight season she leads the nation in save percentage with a .551, averaging 12 saves per game - the fourth most in the NCAA.
THE SERIES
Princeton holds a 37-5 lead over Cornell in the all-time series, since it first began in 1980. The Tigers
are 2-0 this year against the Big Red with a 12-11 double overtime game in the regular season and a 12-9 win in the Ivy League Championship. Both games were in Ithaca. This would be the first time Princeton has played the same opponent three times in one season. Cornell's last victory was a 10-9 overtime game in the Ivy League Tournament last year at Penn. The teams have met once in the NCAA Tournament, in 2001 in the first round. Princeton won that game 14-4.
SCOUTING THE BIG RED
Cornell is 13-5 overall after topping Notre Dame 12-7 in the first round on Friday evening. The Big Red are making their fifth NCAA appearance and second straight after earning an at-large bid. The Big Red are ranked No. 12 in the IWLCA coaches poll and No. 9 in the Inside Lacrosse media poll. The squad's RPI is No. 15 as it has defeated three ranked teams this year: Penn 10-4 and USC 11-10 and now No. 15 Notre Dame. Cornell averages 12.33 goal per game and has the 10th best scoring defense, allowing just 8.56 gpg.
Senior Amie Dickson leads the offense with 69 points on a team-best 40 assists and 29 goals. Catherine Ellis has the most goals, 45, while adding 15 assists for 60 points. Sophomore Sarah Phillips adds 34 goals and 15 assists for 49 points, while senior Kristy Gilbert has 30 goals and eight assists for 38 points and junior Taylor Reed has 34 points. Senior Catie Smith and Dickson are the team leaders around the center circle, with 45 and 40 draws respectively. Smith has the most caused turnovers with 41 and ground balls with 45. Senior Renee Poullot owns every decision in net and has a .513 save percentage and an 8.49 goals against average.
