May 08, 2019 | Men's Tennis
Coming off its program record-tying 20-win season, the Princeton men's tennis team announced its team awards Wednesday night.
Freshman Karl Poling won both the Richard Swinnerton Award, given annually to the freshman who through play, sportsmanship and influence has contributed most to the sport, and the Leon Lapidus Award, given annually to the player who has achieved the highest degree of excellence and demonstrated the greatest amount of dedication throughout the entire season. Poling, the Ivy League Rookie of the Year and first-team All-Ivy honoree, led the team with a 30-4 record in singles and was also 18-16 in doubles. Poling was ranked as high as 82nd nationally in singles on the season and climbed the ladder, competing at third, second and first singles over the spring.
Sophomore Ryan Seggerman won the George Myers Church Tennis Trophy, given annually to the player who has done the most to advance the interests of tennis at Princeton. Seggerman, a first-team All-Ivy doubles honoree, was second on the team in singles wins with a 24-14 record, playing between first and second singles in the spring, and also went 24-14 in doubles, playing almost exclusively at first doubles.
Jimmy Wasserman, the team's lone senior and an economics major, won the David Benjamin Award, given only in years when a graduating senior has combined outstanding intellectual curiosity and team leadership throughout his college career.
