The softball and men's soccer programs were announced as the recipients of the 2020-21 Chi '83 / Ingram '83 Endowment Awards at the Gary Walters '67 PVC Awards Banquet on May 13.
The Chi '83 / Ingram '83 Endowment Fund was established by Youngsuk "Y.S." Chi '83 and John Ingram '83 in 2011. This endowment provides the Department of Athletics with supplemental funding for a team or teams whose coach or coaches demonstrate excellence in teaching and developing student-athletes not only as players but also as people. This prestigious honor is awarded annually by the Ford Family Director of Athletics. A shining example of "the team around the team" quality that distinguishes Princeton Athletics, this endowment fund highlights the tremendous support that undergirds our programs.
Both honored head coaches, Jim Barlow '91 of men's soccer and Lisa Van Ackeren of softball, were integral members of the Community Engagement task force as part of the Department of Athletics' Tigers Together initiative, an ongoing commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion. In addition to developing relationships and partnerships with local organizations as part of their task force efforts, Barlow and Van Ackeren both volunteered regularly with the Princeton Family YMCA and Meals on Wheels of Mercer County to assist with food distribution efforts throughout this past academic year.
The softball program returned to the field after the University approved a return to local competition in April, playing three games that came down to the final pitch against teams battling for the top of their conferences. Members of the program were also active in their communities, including an initiative with the Huntington Beach (Calif.) Special Olympics Initiative, led by team member Serena Starks, in which the team wrote personalized letters to the athletes and then hosted multiple workouts for the group by Zoom. Teammate Madison Hamilton led the Vote Forward Initiative, where the team wrote more than 400 letters to people across the country to encourage civic engagement. Ashley McDonald coordinated an effort through the Boys & Girls Club of Mercer County 5K to raise money to support virtual learning across the county. Lauren Murphy led an effort to send letters to tenants at the Princeton Care Center during the holidays, and the team supported HomeFront NJ's Diaper Drive, helping to organize and donate more than 3,000 diapers on behalf of student-athletes and the department.

Over the past year, the men's soccer team organized a Sleep Out with Covenant House charity to raise money for homeless youth in Newark and achieved 100 percent voter registration from eligible U.S. voters in the program. Team member Alex Charles was the fall season's male PNC Student Athlete Achiever Award honoree for the department, and along with team members' participation in department and University initiatives including Tigers Together, the year saw members of the program volunteer in Dillon Gym with the ongoing COVID testing, with the University's Flu Fest innoculation effort, and with student arrival on campus.
