Sommerfeld Picks Up Bronze Medal At U23 World Rowing Championships

VARESE, Italy – The Princeton Rowing Teams saw four individuals pick up medals at the U19/U23 World Rowing Championships this morning.
"It was an amazing day of racing at the World Championships," said Princeton heavyweight head coach Greg Hughes. "To have four representatives earn medals at the highest level of competition is a wonderful accomplishment."
Cecilia Sommerfeld earned a bronze medal with Germany U23 L2-, crossing the finish line at 7:22.10 behind Italy and Peru. It's her second straight medal at the championships after collecting a silver last year.
Princeton heavyweight rowers Erik Spinka, Zach Vachal and Nathan Phelps of the U23 United States 4+ collected a silver medal (6:06.13) behind Great Britain. Their Princeton teammate, Hanno Brach, helped Germany to fourth place (6:09.46).
Open Rowing
Greta Jaanson (Estonia) won the U23 1x C Final (7:48.79) while Ella Barry (United States) secured fourth place (7:54.02).
Men's Lightweights
Adam Casler '26 and the U19 United States 8+ won its repechage (5:42.78) by almost a second over Italy and races for a medal chance on Sunday.
Reuben Cook '26 (New Zealand) and his partner Logan Docherty were fourth (6:35.35) in the C Final of the U23 L2x
Heavyweights
Floyd Benedikter and Nick Taylor of the U23 United States 2- rowed out to an impressive 6:24.73 to secure ninth overall and third in the B Final.
Andrew Wilkinson '26 helped the U19 U.S. 4+ to a 6:26.20 in the repechage to finish up his championship.
Marcus Chute '26 of Great Britain 1X finished second place (7:05.32) in his quarterfinal and races tomorrow in the semifinal.
