Coulter Mackesy Again Named Ivy Player Of The Week
April 03, 2023 | Men's Lacrosse
Two Ivy wins. Two Coulter Mackesy Ivy Player of the Week awards. For Princeton's men's lacrosse team, it's a perfect combination.
For the second straight week, Princeton won an Ivy League game that it desperately needed. Also for the second straight week, Mackesy has been named the league's Player of the Week.
Mackesy, a sophomore attackman, had a team-best six points on three goals and three assists in a 16-12 win over Brown Satuday afternoon. Mackesy also had two caused turnovers on the ride and three ground balls. That win followed a 23-10 win over Yale a week earlier in which Mackesy had a career-best eight goals and 10 points.
The wins were a huge response for a Princeton team that had lost back-to-back overtime games in its two prior outings, including in its Ivy opener at Penn. Needing wins to get back in the Ivy race, Princeton responded in a big way the last two weeks and reached the midway point of the league season at 2-1.
As for Mackesy, he now ranks second in Division I in extra man goals, fourth in Division I in goals per game and 10th in Division I in points per game. He has reached the 30-goal mark in eight games, and he also has 11 assists for a team-best 41 points.
Princeton will be out of the league this weekend when it renews its rivalry against Syracuse, with face-off at noon on Sherrerd Field, to be followed by the women's game against Columbia. Princeton and Syracuse have met four times in the NCAA final, with each team with two wins. Either Princeton or Syracuse won the NCAA title every year from 1992 through 2004 except for 1999 an 2003.
