Tigers Together commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion serves as a proactive approach to fostering an inclusive environment both within Princeton Athletics and the broader community. This commitment is vividly demonstrated through impactful events like Beauty to the Block. By prioritizing educational growth, encouraging meaningful community engagement, and fostering empowerment through collaborative efforts, This article highlights how Beauty to the Block embodies Tigers Together’s commitment to bringing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion core values to life.
1. Education: Fostering Growth Through Engagement and Reflection
On August 3rd, Trenton’s streets became a symbol of transformation as Beauty to the Block(BTTB) a 501(C) 3 non-profit celebrated its seventh annual event. Co-founders Diane Bellamy and Antonio Bellamy led this initiative, which has evolved from a personal mission to a cornerstone of community empowerment. The event provided free food, clothing, hairstyles, haircuts, and essential resources for Trenton’s residents. The event's success was bolstered by contributions from various vendors, including Glory Firm, the City of Trenton, Faith, and Favor, Makers Place, Transformation Church, and Trenton Downtown Association (TDA). These organizations provided invaluable resources, further enhancing the event's impact. All of the barbers and hairstylists volunteered in their roles for BTTB. BTTB had such a profound impact last year through its collaboration with Princeton Athletics that a robust partnership was forged this year. This year’s event demonstrated the power of education in driving community impact. Senior Associate Head Football Coach Steve Verbit collaborated with the Princeton Athletics Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion to maximize the David Rose Civic Service Coordinator positions. This strategic partnership ensured that the positions honored David Rose’s legacy by offering student-athletes hands-on experience mentoring underrepresented populations and addressing homelessness. Through this initiative, student-athletes Evan Haynie and Jalen Geer gained valuable insights and practical experience, enhancing their understanding of community needs and fostering personal growth. Evan stated “Working with BTTB and the Trenton community was an eye-opening experience. It was incredibly rewarding to see firsthand the impact of our efforts and to connect with so many individuals who had inspired stories and wisdom beyond my belief, especially from the youth in Trenton.”

2. Engagement: Building Connections Within the Community
The event highlighted the significance of meaningful engagement. Princeton University Athletics Equipment Manager Cliff Perry, Defensive Back Coach EJ Henderson and his family, Associate Head Coach Steve Verbit, and Princeton’s legendary figure Hank Towns actively participated, immersing themselves in the Trenton community. Their involvement showcased the importance of building connections and fostering dialogue, empathizing with how impactful relationships can bridge gaps and drive positive change. This deep engagement not only strengthened bonds within the community but also illustrated the power of collaborative efforts in creating lasting transformations.
Antonio Bellemay stated, “Our collaboration with Princeton Athletics has been transformative. It exemplifies how inclusive partnerships can enhance outreach and deepen impact. The synergy between our organizations has created a powerful platform for community engagement and mutual growth.”

3. Empowerment: Cultivating a Sense of Belonging and Mutual Growth
Empowerment was at the heart of the event, as Jalen Geer and Evan Haynie engaged with prominent figures, including Mayor Reed Gusciora, Councilwoman Jasi Mikae Edwards, North Ward Councilwoman Jennifer Williams, and NAACP Trenton Chapter President Austin Edwards. Their interactions not only broadened their perspectives but also emphasized the importance of community connections in fostering inclusive excellence.

Jalen Geer reflected on his experience, saying, “Connecting with the Trenton community in such a short time profoundly impacted my life. The experience deepened my understanding of the challenges faced by others and strengthened my commitment to making a difference. It’s incredible how quickly meaningful connections can transform both individuals and communities.

Over the past seven weeks, Evan and Jalen’s dedication to organizing Beauty to the Block was instrumental. Diane Bellamy expressed her gratitude: “Evan and Jalen's involvement has been truly invaluable. Their dedication to the organizational process and their authentic engagement with the community show the power of collaborative civic involvement. Witnessing their growth and the positive changes they have brought to the event has been rewarding.”
In essence, Beauty to the Block extends beyond immediate services; it embodies a profound commitment to empowerment through relationship-building, community engagement, and collaborative education. By fostering meaningful connections among participants, volunteers, and local organizations, the event strengthens the fabric of the Trenton community. This partnership embodies how shared goals can lead to impactful outcomes, transforming lives and uplifting the community. Beauty to the Block paves the way for a brighter, more equitable future for all involved.
