Women's Hoops Nearly Upsets Georgia Tech

Ali Smith and Katy O'Brien hit five three-pointers and led Princeton with 17 points each as the Tigers nearly upset Georgia Tech in Jadwin Gym. Two free throws by Tech's Alex Stewart with no time remaining in the game gave the Yellow Jackets the 67-66 win. Princeton fell to 2-7 while Georgia Tech improved to 7-2.
Georgia Tech led for most of the first half but back-to-back three-pointers by O'Brien at 15:55 and 15:20 and another by Smith, who earned her first start of the year, kept the Tigers alive from the start. Smith added two more threes while Becky Brown scored six points in the paint to help Princeton in the first. Georgia Tech's Megan Isom had a team-high eight points as the Yellow Jackets went on a 13-2 run in the final six minutes to build a 34-24 lead at halftime. After scoring only nine first-half field goals, Princeton came out on fire after the break and took its first lead, 55-53, off Smith's fifth three-pointer at 8:15. O'Brien followed that up with a three of her own just 30 seconds later but Stokes responded with seven of her team's 11 points in the next five minutes.
Brown, who missed last game due to an injury, came alive with the Tigers final seven points to give Princeton a 66-62 edge with less than a minute to play. Isom forced a three-pointer with a defender in her face at 0:39 and connected, narrowing Princeton's lead to 66-65.
The Tigers ran down the clock but committed a shot clock violation, giving Georgia Tech the ball with 10 seconds remaining in the game.
Stewart beat her opponent to the basket and drew a shooting foul as time expired, putting her on the foul line for two shots as the game's final deciding factor. After Stewart swished the first to tie the score at 66-66, Princeton called a timeout to ice her. Stewart hit the second to win the game for her team, 67-66. She finished with seven points while Stokes led Georiga Tech with 15 points, including 13 in the second half.
O'Brien added seven assists and Smith had three to go along with their game-highs of 17 points. Brown finished with 15 points and six rebounds while Katy Digovich had nine points, eight rebounds and three assists.
The Tigers outscored the Yellow Jackets 42-33 in the second half by shooting 52% from the field and hitting six three-pointers. They finished the game shooting 50% behind the arc.
Princeton (2-7) next travels to the Montana Tournament on Dec. 28-29.
