Tiger Parents Central

Congratulations on your son or daughter becoming a Tiger!
Princeton Athletics is thrilled to welcome you and your family to our unparalleled tradition of Education Through Athletics and Competitive Excellence. The athletic experience at Princeton will be an essential component of the undergraduate experience overall, preparing student-athletes to Achieve, Serve, and Lead.
We are committed to a culture centered around the values of our Be A TIGER campaign, which expects all members of our team to be: Accountable, Team-oriented, (have) Integrity, Growth-minded, Engaged, and Respectful. We know you’re excited to support what happens in our classrooms and athletic programs, and we look forward to having you on our “team around the team.”
NCAA Rules for Parents of Student-Athletes
- Student-athletes, their friends and relatives may not be provided with “extra benefits.” An extra benefit is anything that is not generally available to the general public, student body, or a larger subset of the student body that is not related to Athletics. This also includes any benefit expressly permitted by NCAA rules.
- Student-athletes may not accept gifts or services at reduced prices that not available to the general public or other students.
- Relatives and friends of student-athletes are also subject to this rule and may not receive benefits, gifts, or discounts from Princeton coaches, staff members, Representatives of Athletics Interests (Friends Group members), or commercial entities.
- Example: When parents visit Princeton they may not receive a special discounted hotel rate simply because they are the parents of a student-athlete.
If someone offers a product or service for free or at a discounted rate to a parent, guardian, or relative of a student-athlete, and the same benefit is not available to those relatives of all Princeton students or to the general public, accepting the offer will result in a NCAA violation and will jeopardize the athletics eligibility of that student-athlete.
Parents/guardians may provide any and all benefits to their own children but there are restrictions on what may be provided to other student-athletes. The following chart provides information on said restrictions with respect to meals, tailgates, transportation and gifts.
Permissible | Not Permissible
Meals | Paying for your child’s meal. | Paying for the meals of all of your child’s teammates. |
Meals | Dining at the same restaurant as the team and paying for your own meal. | Dining at the same restaurant as the team and paying for the meals of other parents and/or your child’s teammates. |
Meals | On an occasional basis, you may provide the team with a meal, either while they are traveling or near Princeton. Subject to certain restrictions, the meal may be provided at your home, in a restaurant, or post-contest at a competition site (e.g., tailgate). Please always contact the coach first about how you may be permitted to provide a meal. |
|
Meals/ TAILGATES | Tailgates conducted on a pot-luck basis, with each parent contributing something (within reason) to the tailgate. It is permissible for all student-athletes, parents and other family members to participate, as everyone has "paid" for their meal through their contribution in-kind. | Tailgates sponsored and/ or hosted by one parent or a small group of parents. It is not permissible for all student-athletes, parents and other family members to participate. |
Meals/ TAILGATES | Tailgates conducted on a shared cost basis, with each parent contributing an equal amount of funding to a “general tailgate fund.” It is permissible for all student-athletes, parents and other family members to participate, as everyone has "paid" for their meal through their financial contribution. | Tailgates funded by one parent or a group of parents. It is not permissible for all student-athletes, parents and other family members to participate. |
Gifts | Giving your child a gift. | Giving your child’s teammates gifts. |
Gifts | Contributing to a general pool to purchase gifts for each member of the team. | Buying gifts for every member of the team. |
Gifts | Giving gifts (i.e., matching hats/jackets/apparel/photo albums) to other parents.
Transportation | Providing transportation to your own child (must receive approval from Department of Athletics beforehand if it is to or from a contest or official Athletics function). | Providing team members (those not traveling with the team) with a ride to an away contest or other event. |
Transportation | Riding on the team bus. |
