Boston, Mass. - Northeastern's Ashley Webber scored two goals as the Huskies edged the Princeton field hockey team 3-1 Sunday afternoon in Boston. Freshman Elizabeth Williams scored her first collegiate goal in the loss.
Princeton is now 2-4 overall and 2-0 in the Ivy League after Saturday's win at Dartmouth. All four of Princeton's losses have come to teams ranked in the nation's top 13. Northeastern was ranked 13th entering the weekend.
Webber put the Huskies on the board six minutes into the game when she took a pass from Whitney Shean and shot it through congestion to the back of the cage. The score remained tied through the half, but Webber scored just over a minute into the second half to make the score 2-0.
Princeton scored at 55:14 when Williams scored her first goal of the season. Northeastern added some insurance seven minutes later when Natalie Singelais sent a pass to the far post where Michaela O'Malley was waiting to tap the ball in the goal.
The game was marked by spectacular goaltending at both ends of the field. Princeton junior goalkeeper Allison Nemeth made eight saves in defeat, while Northeastern's Colleen Duffy allowed a goal while making seven saves, including several crucial saves on Princeton penalty corners late in the second half.
Each team fired 14 shots in the game, but Princeton held a 7-2 edge in penalty corners. Sophomore Paige Schmidt had three shots in the game for Princeton.
Princeton returns to Ivy action Saturday afternoon against Columbia at home.
