Princeton Blanks Rutgers 3-0
October 29, 2006 | Field Hockey
PRINCETON -- The Ivy League champion Princeton field hockey team won its 10th game of the season and its third in a row by shutting out Rutgers 3-0 on a windy Sunday afternoon at Class of '52 Stadium. Seniors goalkeepers Allison Nemeth and Juliana Simon combined for the shutout.
The teams felt their way through a defensive first half that was spent mostly in the middle of the field. Princeton outshot Rutgers in the half 8-2 and got on the scoreboard at 27:49 when sophomore Holly McGarvie scored the eventual game winner. Her team-leading eighth goal of the season came on a Tiger corner. Junior Paige Schmidt took the shot from the top of the circle and McGarvie deflected it by Rutgers goalkeeper Rosalyn Wentko for the go-ahead score.
Princeton added breathing room early in the second half to build the final 3-0 margin. Just over a minute into the half, sophomore Sarah Reinprecht scored on a penalty stroke for her fourth goal of the season, and her second successful stroke, after she was fouled in front of the goal.
Sophomore Kristin Schwab added the game's final goal four minutes later to cap the scoring. Junior Nicole Ng fired the ball into the circle and Wentko tried to play it away but Schwab gathered it in and scored her third goal of the season.
Nemeth made two saves while Simon made one save as each played 35 minutes as Princeton earned its second consecutive shutout following its 1-0 win over American last Sunday. Princeton now has shut out Rutgers in each of the past two seasons, and has gotten the better of its in-state rival the last nine times the teams have met.
Princeton improved to 10-6 with the win and has one game remaining on its regular-season schedule. That game comes next Friday night at 7 p.m. when the Tigers host Penn in the Ivy League finale as Princeton looks to complete a perfect 7-0 Ivy League season.
