PRINCETON, N.J. (9/17/14) - Senior Cameron Porter gave Princeton the lead but a strong second-half showing by No. 13 Georgetown saw three goals as the Hoyas defeated the Tigers 3-1 in an ESPNU televised contest on Myslik Field at Roberts Stadium.
Junior goalkeeper Ben Hummel made a career-high 10 saves in the loss. The save of the night game in the 12th minute when Hummel saved a rebound shot by Austin Martz off the line.
Porter scored his team-leading fourth goal of the season in the 36th minute to put the Tigers on the board first. Senior Myles McGinley collected his fourth assist of the season when he delivered a cross from the right side to junior Andrew Doar. Doar headed in into the top of the box where Porter edged his defender and blew the ball past goalkeeper Tomas Gomez.
Two quick strikes in the second half gave the Hoyas the 2-1 lead, as Brandon Allen and Tyler Rudy, scored within two minutes of each other.
Joshua Yaro started the play in the midfield and put the ball into the center of the field for Alex Muyl. Muyl one-timed the ball ahead for Allen who deked his defender and fired a low shot to the far post. Less than two minutes later Rudy scored an unassisted goal on a long shot from about 25 yards out. Princeton had tried to clear the ball out of its defending third but the ball landed on the feet of Rudy who fired for the go-ahead goal.
Martz would get back that near goal in the early minutes of the game in the 78th minute. Left unmarked he fired a goal that skimmed off of Hummel's gloves, hit the right post and deflected into the goal.
Fatigue set in on the Tigers after a relentless first half that saw solid offensive chances and tackling defense. Princeton struggled to get its offense going in the second 45, which resulted in an 11-0 shot advantage for the Hoyas, and holes started to show in the defense.
"We were a little bit disappointed that more guys didn't have a better game," Princeton head coach Jim Barlow said. "When you're playing a team that good, everyone has to have a good day. We had a lead and we felt like we could still raise the level at the start of the second half, in terms of making it harder for them to stretch us out. We wanted to be a little bit sharper with our ability to connect going forward, and we just struggled in both of those areas. We had a few big breakdowns defensively and then we couldn't keep it when we won it. Credit to them. They put so much pressure on you, they press hard, and we felt like we never could get it going today."
Georgetown finished with 19 shots to Princeton's five, with Gomez making one save to help his team improve to 3-1-3 on the season. The Hoyas has a 10-3 edge in corner kicks, but were called offsides nine times, while Princeton was not caught offsides.
Princeton, now 1-2-1 overall, travels to take on Boston University on Saturday, Sept. 20. Game time is at 4 p.m., on Nickerson Field.
