PRINCETON, N.J. – Maddie Copeland and Ryan McCarthy each netted a pair of goals to lead the 20th-ranked Princeton University field hockey team to a 4-0 victory over Yale University on Bedford Field.
Netting her eighth goal in four games, Copeland also assisted on McCarthy's second tally in the waning moments of regulation. Also turning in a solid defensive effort, the Tigers did not allow a shot or surrender a penalty corner in the contest.
Finally getting on the field after last night's rainout, Princeton evened its season record to 4-4 (2-0 Ivy). Improving to 40-2-3 all-time against Yale (2-6, 0-2 Ivy), the Tigers have won 31-straight against the Bulldogs and have not dropped a game to their conference rivals since 1977.
Controlling possession from the onset, Princeton earned its first penalty corner of the game in the fifth minute. Holding the ball at the top of the circle, Teresa Benvenuti sent a pass toward Nicole Catalino, who redirected a try off the right post.
Continuing to push forward in the 18th minute, Princeton earned another penalty corner. Corralling a rebound off a Benvenuti shot, McCarthy beat Yale goalie Emilie Katz at 17:40 to stake the Tigers to an early lead. Just 1:15 later Copeland doubled the margin, ripping a low shot into the left side of the Bulldogs' cage.
Adding to the Princeton lead in the second half, Copeland notched her second of the day at 59:50. Tracking down a loose ball in the middle of the circle after a failed Yale clearance, Copeland backhanded a shot past Katz to make it 3-0. With just 45 seconds left, Copeland found McCarthy on the backpost, who slid a shot under Katz while going to the ground to cap off the scoring.
Princeton finished with a 23-0 shot advantage and a 7-0 edge in penalty corners. The Tigers return to action on Sunday, Oct. 4 against Penn State. Game time is set for 12 p.m.
