PRINCETON, N.J. – Behind another solid defensive effort and goals from Maddie Copeland and Nicole Catalino, the 20th-ranked Princeton University field hockey team earned a 2-0 victory over Penn State University on Bedford Field.
Improving to 5-4 overall on the season, the Tigers are now 7-3 against the Nittany Lions (5-6) since 2008. Princeton returns to action on Friday, Oct. 9 against Columbia.
For the second time in as many days, Catalino narrowly missed out on an opportunity to put Princeton ahead in the game's opening minutes, redirecting a Teresa Benvenuti feed coming out of a penalty corner off the right post at 1:16.
Looking to generate a scoring opportunity of its own, Penn State earned consecutive penalty corners in the 20th minute. Receiving the inserts at the top of the circle, Katie Dembrowski put a pair of shots on target that forced a couple of Anya Gersoff saves.
In the 24th minute, the Nittany Lions once again went on the offensive, earning two more penalty corners. Testing Gersoff, Shay Cannon ripped a couple of shots toward the Princeton cage, but could not slip one past the Tigers' netminder.
With the game still scoreless early in the second half, the Tigers finally broke through. Carving out space in front, Copeland corralled a loose ball before quickly turning and firing a hard shot into the bottom left corner of the Penn State cage for her ninth goal in five games.
Continuing to push forward in the 52nd minute, Princeton doubled its margin. Sophia Tornetta got the play started by sending the insert off a penalty corner to Elise Wong, who set up a shot for Hailey Reeves. With the Penn State defense knocking down the initial try, Cat Caro hit a ball toward the cage that eventually found Catalino, who snuck a shot past freshman goalie Jenny Rizzo for her fourth goal of the season.
Princeton finished with a 14-9 shot advantage with each team earning six penalty corners. Gersoff made seven saves in the win, while Rizzo had six stops.
