No. 20 Princeton Field Hockey Cruises Past Bucknell, 5-1
September 12, 2015 | Field Hockey
LEWISBURG, Pa. – Nicole Catalino netted a pair of goals to help lead the 20th-ranked Princeton University field hockey team to a 5-1 victory over Bucknell.
Avenging last season's overtime loss to the Bison, the Tigers improved to 1-2 on the season and 4-1 all-time against Bucknell. Finishing with a 16-4 shot advantage, Princeton held a 5-3 edge in penalty corners.
Wasting little time getting on the board, Danielle Duseau helped set up Ryan McCarthy for her first goal of the season at 7:50. In the 19th minute, Catalino doubled the lead, redirecting a shot off of a penalty corner into the back of the Bucknell cage.
Approaching the 10-minute mark, Bison goalkeeper Shannon Keen foiled a would-be Ellen Dobrijevic breakaway chance, poking the ball over the endline. Moments later, Sophia Tornetta dribbled through the circle before finding Dobrijevic at 25:03 for the Tigers' third tally.
In the 31st minute, Princeton closed out the first half scoring as Cat Caro passed up a hit from the top of the circle following a penalty corner to feed Catalino at the near-post.
Hoping to turn the tide early in the second half, Bucknell drew a foul inside the circle. Putting the Bison on the board, Kayla Sullivan converted the ensuing the penalty stroke at 44:08 to trim the Princeton lead to 4-1.
Coming right back, Caro nearly pushed the Tigers' margin back up to four, diving to redirect a shot toward the Bucknell cage. With less than 10 minutes to play, Caro put away a rebound off a Maddie Copeland shot to put the finishing touches on a 5-1 Princeton win.
Senior goalkeeper Anya Gersoff needed to make just one save to earn her first victory of the season, while Keen turned away seven shots for the Bison.
Princeton returns to action on Sunday, Sept. 13 at No. 18 Delaware. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
