FRIDAY RECAP: Efficient Tigers post 3-0 wins over Duquesne, Rutgers
Down 2-1 and trailing 20-13 in the fourth set, the Princeton women's volleyball team was staring at a very disappointing final performance before the Ivy League season begins this Friday.
The Tigers stared, but they never blinked.
Princeton won 28 of the final 38 points to stun an upset-minded Howard squad and complete a perfect weekend at the Rutgers Tournament. One day after basically going wire-to-wire in wins over Duquesne and Rutgers, Princeton had to dig deep to claw out the 23-25, 25-23, 17-25, 25-22, 15-8 victory.
Once again, the 1-2 punch of Kendall Peterkin and Cara Mattaliano proved too much for its opposition. The pair combined for 36 of Princeton's 59 kills, while Mattaliano added 12 digs and four blocks in the win. Junior middle Brittany Ptak added eight kills, while the setting duo of Lauren Miller (33) and Claire Nussbaum (21) combined for 54 assists.
Howard seemed in control after a 25-17 win in the third and a late seven-point lead in the fourth. Mattaliano served Princeton on a 5-0 run to get within two points, and Daschbach got the serve with the Tigers down 22-20. One week after she served Princeton on an 18-point run against Hartford, the senior libero led the Tigers on another 5-0 run to take the set.
Princeton led the whole way in the fifth and got key kills by Ptak and Stephanie Marani midway through en route to a 15-8 win.
Princeton will make both its home and Ivy League debut Friday night at 7 pm when it plays host to Penn at Dillon Gym. The match will be streamed live on the Ivy League Digital Network.
