Tigers Win Big at Rutgers, 4-1
October 11, 2016 | Men's Soccer
Four different goal scorers led Princeton to a 4-1 win over Rutgers on Tuesday night in a battle of the Garden State squads.
Â
The Tigers grabbed a 3-0 lead at halftime, as they put four shots on target and held the Scarlet Knights to not a single chance.
Â
Sophomore Sean McSherry got things started in the 18th minute. Senior midfielder Brian Costa had the ball at midfield and pushed it ahead to McSherry about 25 yards out. McSherry dribbled up to the top of the 18-yard box and put a left-footed shot between his defenders and past a leaping David Greczek.
Â
Princeton added two goals 1:13 seconds apart to gain a 3-0 lead.
Â
A throw-in by senior Greg Seifert was launched into the left corner where sophomore Jeremy Colvin picked it up and centered it for senior Vikram Pothuri who one-time it with a high knee over the head of Greczek.
Â
The Tigers had the numbers again thanks to a long ball by Colvin to the feet of a sprinting Seifert down the left flank. Pothuri came down the center with junior Harry Heffernan on the right and four Scarlet Knight defenders trailing. Seifert ripped a shot from the left side of the box than came off the gloves of Greczek to the Heffernan on the right side and he was all alone for the rebound.
Â
Dante Perez thwarted the shutout with a tally in the 55th minute. Two Princeton defenders came in to collapse and he squeezed the ball through and was able to stay on his feet and finish from the left side.
Â
A magnificent double header was the final strike in the 80th minute. Freshman Benjamin Issroff looked up from his midfield position to see Benjamin Martin open on the opposite side of the field and he lofted the ball down to him at the corner of the six-yard box. Martin headed it across the box and Seifert headed it into the goal in a top-10 worthy play.
Â
Princeton outshot Rutgers 14-6 and improves to 6-4-1 on the season.
Â
Senior Josh Haberman made one save in the win, while Greczek stopped four shots as Rutgers drops to 0-9-2.
Â
The Tigers travel to Columbia on Saturday, Oct. 15 for a 4 p.m., Ivy League match.
