October 18, 2016 | Field Hockey
PRINCETON, N.J. – After a 2-0 weekend that featured senior Cat Caro recording consecutive hat tricks, the Princeton Tigers maintained their No. 11 position in the Penn Montco/National Field Hockey Coaches' Poll (NFHCA) Coaches' Poll.
Â
Caro was honored as the Ivy League Co-Player and Coach USA Princeton Athlete of the Week while freshman Carlotta von Gierke was picked as the Ivy League Rookie of the Week for their performances against Brown and Towson last weekend.
Â
In Princeton's 5-1 win over Brown on Saturday, Caro got the scoring started less than 90 seconds into the contest. After scoring another goal in the 20th minute, the senior finished off her first career hat trick with four minutes remaining. Also in the game, von Gierke recorded an assist in the win.
The Tigers nabbed an 8-0 victory over Towson on Sunday in which Caro snagged her second straight hat trick. She finished the two games with 12 points and now has a new career high with 28 points this season. During the contest, von Gierke posted a goal and assist. The freshman is tied for second in the Ivy League with eight assists.
Â
For the fourth straight week, Connecticut was selected as the No. 1 team in the coaches' poll with 32 first-place votes and 892 voting points. Duke, Syracuse, North Carolina and Maryland round out the top five with Penn State, Louisville, Delaware, Virginia and Northwestern also in front of the Princeton. For the first time this season, another Ivy League school makes an appearance in the poll as the Tigers' next opponent, Harvard, is No. 20.
Â
Princeton sits No. 10 in the NCAA's most recent RPI rankings, trailing Duke, Syracuse, Connecticut, North Carolina, Maryland, Penn State, Virginia, Delaware and Louisville. The Tigers have faced six of the teams that are in front of them in the rankings. Harvard stands in the No. 12 spot while Penn is No. 23.
Â
Head coach Carla Tagliente's team is 9-5 overall and 4-0 in the Ivy League. The Tigers will welcome the only other undefeated team in the Ivy, No. 20 Harvard (8-4, 4-0), to Bedford on Saturday (12 p.m.). The game can be seen on the Ivy League Digital Network.
