No. 20 Harvard Prevails Over No. 11 Princeton, 3-2
October 22, 2016 | Field Hockey
PRINCETON, N.J. – No. 20 Harvard's Kathleen Young scored just one minute into overtime to give the Crimson a 3-2 victory over No. 11 Princeton at Bedford Field on Saturday afternoon.
Â
Harvard's first scoring threat came in eighth minute as the Hannah Wellington whipped a shot in the circle that freshman Maddie Bacskai blocked. The Crimson followed with back-to-back shots in the 12th minute off a corner, but freshman Grace Baylis stopped them both. One minute later, Harvard's Marissa Balleza touched in a pass from Maddie Earle to put the Crimson in front, 1-0.
Â
Princeton's best chance to score in the first half was in the 21st minute as freshman Taylor Nolan had some open space in the circle, but her attempt was wide of the cage. A few minutes later, the Crimson registered its second tally of the contest as Young inserted a mishit off Ellie Cookson's stick. Harvard took a 2-0 advantage into halftime, leading 8-2 in shots and 3-0 in corners.
Â
The home squad finally got on the board with its first shot of the second half. Sophomore Jane Donio-Enscoe dribbled along the left side of the field and passed to senior Cat Caro in the circle. After a few dribbles, Caro slapped an attempt and sophomore Sophia Tornetta knocked it in by the Crimson's goalie Libby Manela to get the Tigers within one at the 25:53 mark.
Â
Immediately following the goal, junior Ryan McCarthy tried for the equalizer, but her shot was off the mark. Finally, as the clock ticked near six minutes to go, Princeton tied the contest off a corner. Tornetta inserted to Bacskai, who controlled the bouncing ball and knocked an attempt towards the cage. The scoring prowess of Caro came through as she deflected the ball through.
Â
For the second time this season, Princeton dropped an overtime decision as Young put in the game-winner a minute into the extra session. The Tigers fell to 9-6 overall and 4-1 in the Ivy League while Harvard improved to 9-4 and 5-0 in the conference. Princeton travels to Cornell next Saturday (12 p.m.).
